Okay, let’s talk about the elephant in the room. Or should I say, the missing phone in the room. If you’ve been doom-scrolling through tech Twitter or keeping an eye on the Nothing community forums lately, you know the drill. We were all sort of expecting to hear murmurs about the Nothing Phone (4) by now. A July 2026 launch seemed like a safe bet based on the rumor mill from late last year .
But then, Carl Pei had to go and be Carl Pei—which is to say, he completely flipped the script.
The "Bad" News First
In a recent YouTube address that felt more like a fireside chat than a corporate keynote, Pei confirmed what a lot of us weren't ready to hear: There will be no Nothing Phone (4) in 2026 .
Yep, you read that right. The Phone (3), which dropped in July 2025, is going to remain the flagship for the entire year .
At first, I’ll admit, I was annoyed. We live in a world of annual upgrades. It’s clockwork. Samsung releases an S-series, Apple drops an iPhone, and Google puts out a Pixel. It’s comfortable. But Pei’s reasoning actually made me stop and think: “We’re not just going to churn out a new flagship every year for the sake of it; we want every upgrade to feel significant.”
Honestly? Fair enough.
The "Good" News (And Why It’s Actually Smart)
Does this mean Nothing is going dark in 2026? Not even close. They are just shifting the spotlight to where it arguably matters more in the current economy: the mid-range.
The focus this year is going to be the Phone (4a) series. And according to Pei, it’s going to be a "complete evolution" of the Phone (3a) and (3a) Pro .
We’re apparently looking at upgrades across the board—display, camera, performance—that aim to bring the "a" series even closer to that premium feel . There’s also talk of "premium materials" and some "bold" experimentation with colors . Knowing Nothing’s design language, I’m genuinely curious to see what that means. A hot pink Glyph interface? A transparent matte finish we haven’t seen before? Sign me up.
In a way, this feels like Nothing doubling down on what made the Phone (1) and (2) great: offering a design-first software experience without forcing you to take out a second mortgage.
The "Dream" Spec Sheet (We Can Still Dream!)
Just because the flagship is delayed doesn’t mean we can’t look ahead to 2027. When the Phone (4) does eventually arrive, the leaks and speculation are already painting a picture of a beast. Based on earlier rumors and comparisons that are floating around, here is what the community is hoping makes it into the final build :
· The Display: A gorgeous 6.67-inch OLED with a buttery 120Hz refresh rate. Some rumors even suggest a peak brightness that could hit an eye-searing 4500 nits .
· The Brains: It will likely pack the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 (or whatever the latest variant is by 2027) to keep it competitive .
· The Cameras: A triple threat on the back, all clocking in at 50MP, and another 50MP up front for selfies .
· The Battery: If we are lucky, we might see that jump to a 6000mAh cell with even faster wired and wireless charging .
The OS Vibe Check
On the software side, Nothing OS continues to be one of the few Android skins I actually want to use. That said, the recent rollout of Nothing OS 4.0 hasn't been totally smooth sailing. If you pop into the community forums, you’ll see the usual rollout hiccups—some users reporting green tint issues on the 2a Plus, battery drain on the 3a, or weird bugs like the volume bar acting possessed .
It’s a good reminder that while we wait for the big hardware (the Phone 4), Nothing needs to keep refining the software experience for the devices people are using right now. Hopefully, by the time the Phone (4) lands in 2027, it will launch on a rock-solid version of Nothing OS 5.0.
The Bottom Line
Look, I’m bummed we aren’t getting a new Nothing flagship in 2026. But I respect the restraint. In an industry obsessed with incrementalism, Nothing is betting that waiting an extra year to make the Phone (4) a true leap forward will pay off.
In the meantime, the Phone (3) is still a killer device, and the upcoming Phone (4a) series sounds like it might be the value king of the year.
